We, the electorate (aka the voters), are at the top of the org chart. We elect county commissioners to four year terms from seven regional districts to represent the county at large. Elections are held every two years on a rotation so that not all commissioners are campaigning at the same time. This year (2022) Commissioners Weinroth and Weiss are running for reelection and Commissioner McKinlay's seat is open due to her having served the maximum eight years.
All of the boxes above demonstrate county administrators, employees, departments, divisions, services, authorities, etc. report to the seven county commissioners. As you can see, the county Administrator, Verdenia Baker, has a very important role as the link between the commissioners and almost every department in this chart.
The other constitutional officers voted on by the county electorate are listed in the top right corner. They are elected by and represent the county at large.
As you can see, the majority of Palm Beach County employers fall under the "services" category. According to this report updated in January 2021, the Palm Beach County School District is the largest employer with 22,600 employees. The Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners is number three with 5,686 employees at the time of the above publication.
